A language Learning Journey

Hi, My name is Amy. Born, grew up, studied and worked in China, until one day an idea came into my mind to explore to the new world Australia.

So I came, with limited English skills gained during my middle school plus University study. Imagine how challenging it can be to live in a new environment speaking a new language doing everything everyday. Not only attending classes, finishing assignments, but also interacting with people, looking after everything in your life.

But I gave myself a simple goal: improve a bit everyday, learn a few new dialogues, find and memorize some new words, focus extremely on listening during lessons, read out aloud the good sentences and very importantly, find chances to speak the language. As a result, to my surprise, I improved a lot within months. I started to use English confidently in everyday activities.

Learning Mandarin Chinese can be hard just as learning English, but it is also easy if you put in some effort regularly and set a goal to achieve. As the old saying puts it, where there is a will, there is a way.

Though all my educational background was mainly in engineering field both for the University and Post graduate study, and work experience also was mainly in engineering field, these didn't impede my passion in language learning, language teaching and literature reading. In my leisure time through all these years, I read extensively in Chinese literature and western classical works, I believe all the time spent has contributed to a good understanding in language and communication. I also self studied Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language, did some research on the commonly used Chinese textbooks and grammar books, being school textbooks, or textbooks for travel or business purposes. For the systematic Chinese learning, choosing a suitable textbook is also important. During the many past years, luckily I got opportunities to teach both Mandarin and English, to help adults and kids who are interested in learning languages, improving the school work, homework and assessment performance. I also gained valuable experience in teaching my son Mandarin. Being able to express and communicate clearly in standard Mandarin, equipped with life experience ,patience and understanding, I am quite confident to welcome the future teaching opportunities and look forward to enjoying the language learning journey together with you. For all the lessons, the learning contents will be customized and adjusted according to your specific needs. For the initial two weeks, I will provide one lesson per week to you, after that, if you wish, you can add more lessons. There will also be relevant materials for you to review and consolidate after each lesson for the best learning result. (Ever lived and worked in a Cantonese speaking environment for many years, I am also able to speak Cantonese fluently and confidently, so anyone who needs to travel, work or study in Hongkong , South East Asia and needs to acquire basic oral Cantonese, I would also like to help.)

Like any language learning, or any skills obtaining, practice is the most important way to master Chinese. No matter it is grammar, oral expression, pronunciation, tone or punctuation, and written expression as long as you listen carefully, consolidate regularly, practise continuously according to your learning plan and goal, you will see your small steps finally become giant leaps. It doesn't need to be long hours everyday, the frequency and your perseverance counts. Your muscle needs time to form memory, the same with your brain. Tell yourself you can do it, find opportunities to practise when you shop, walk on street, dine out or have a break. Start chatting in Chinese, take a small Chinese book to read, or start with a textbook, ask help and take lessons whenever you feel the need. I believe that is the easy way to learn and you will realize your confidence grow as you walk out of your comfort zone, put knowledge into action and progress.
