I am busy completing my Masters's in Biotechnology. I love teaching students, and I have helped many people out at the NWU's writing lab. My favorite session was working through an Afrikaans science project with a German student. You learn quickly that people write exactly what they hear. I hope to have more fun and interesting moments like these. The easiest way I could help her learn and talk like an Afrikaner was to engage in everyday conversation for the first 3 sessions and from there we moved over to writing. Every person will differ but I would say 10 sessions would establish a good basis for Afrikaans vocabulary.

Hello! My name is Dawid and I'm from South Africa. I've been living in Moscow since 2017 and absolutely love it here. I'm Bilingual in English and Afrikaans and I know some Russian. I enjoy teaching people about my whacky language called Afrikaans. It's a very fun and expressive language that's super easy to learn. I've got 6 years of language teaching experience and about 7 years on the job skills teaching experiences like first aid instructor and team-leading exercises. I'm a very friendly and funny person and love to make jokes during every session.

I am a qualified teacher with more than 10 years of experience in teaching and having exposure to the British curriculum methodology. I grew up in the Free State, South Africa and took Afrikaans Language and Literature at the University of the Free State and also did my Honours Degree in Drama there. I have taught English and Photography in the past to children and adults. I enjoy writing poetry in Afrikaans and still regularly travel to South Africa from the UK to visit family. Afrikaans is easier to learn than German or French and people who already know German or Dutch find pronouncing the words very easy. I find that the easiest way to learn Afrikaans is to focus on a specific area of interest at a time, for instance, I may take students to a cafe or plan a specific topic and then explore all scenarios, and humour of course as Afrikaans is full of subtle humour and puns, around the chosen area. This is both fun and has the best success rate in helping students retain the language. I will bring in some necessary references to grammar when it is called for but mainly focus on the conversational element to get students talking as quickly as possible. If you are travelling to South Africa, or Namibia learning Afrikaans will greatly enhance your experience of the culture and help you connect with people on a deeper level. Depending on your goals I believe that between 10 and 20 lessons are good to get started and be able to have a good conversation depending on your own commitment and experience.

I grew up in an Afrikaans household and am fluent in both Afrikaans and English thanks to going to an English school and university. In the past I have tutored high school students in Mathematics, Physical Science and Afrikaans as a first additional language. I matriculated as the DUX of my school and achieved the highest marks for Afrikaans as a first additional language among other subjects. Through a combination of basic language rules, hearing, reading and speaking the language I hope to pass on the language as I have done for previous students.
